About
Bird Notes is a weekly update of bird news from around North Wales, curated by Julian Hughes. A new blog is posted each Monday and is published in the Daily Post North Wales each Thursday.
The weekly column is almost certainly the longest-running weekly column on nature anywhere in the world. It appeared, initially as the Countryside column in the Liverpool Daily Post, by Eric Hardy from 1929 until July 2000 except for a break while he served in the Middle East during the Second World War. Following Eric's retirement, a couple of years before his death at the age of 90, the column became Bird Notes and was published only in the North Wales edition of the Daily Post, written by Alan Davies (2000-07), Robin Sandham (2008) and Julian Hughes (2009-).
However, a Nature Notes column had appeared in the Liverpool Daily Post for 20 years before Eric Hardy's, signed off as 'FZS', but written by the celebrated Cheshire naturalist, T.A. Coward (1867-1933).
An archive of Bird Notes from January 2014 to September 2020 is held on the Daily Post/North Wales Live website.
